Cheap Yeti Cups
Yeti started constructing wicked tough coolers in 2006. In years prior, I speculate they built Army tanks. Both the Yeti Rambler Tumbler and the Rambler Colster are practically bullet proof (although I am not prepared to test that theory) and reliably keep beverages cold throughout the blazing hot summer.
I’ve been using the 30 ounce wholesale Yeti cups drink cooler Rambler Tumbler for several weeks now and it has not left my side. Each morning at 5:30 AM I fill my Tumbler with freshly brewed coffee. At 9:00 when I take my last sip (Is it bad to drink coffee for 3.5 hours?), the coffee is still piping hot.
After a quick wash, I fill the the rugged stainless steel Yeti drink cooler with ice water. I have found that I drink considerably more water when it is consistently cold, helping to avoid dehydration on hot days.
I also may have (there is no proof) covertly filled the Tumbler with a certain craft summer beer on a recent art festival outing. Now that’s a multipurpose utility cup.
Oh yeah, because of the tapered design, the Tumbler easily fits the beverage holder in my truck.
The Rambler Colster has been essential at the pool and on the boat. Both environments provide very little shade where an unprotected soda, or summer beer, will come to a boil within minutes. Install the insulated Colster on a can or bottle and your refreshing beverage will be enjoyable for hours. If you happen to kick your Colster into the lake, snag it quick. As it fills with water it will sink, and you don’t want to squander both a Colster and a refreshing summer beer.
Yeti Rambler Tumblers
In a market full with vacuum-insulated vessels, the YETI Rambler Tumblers stand out as ‘personal drink coolers’ to keep you sipping all day long.
This month, we teamed with YETI on a photo contest, and among the prizes are the brand’s Rambler Tumblers insulated cups. I used the occasion to test one out, and from daybreak to sundown, the YETI has become my go-to drinkware.
It served as a coffee cup heading out the door in the morning, transformed for drinking iced tea at lunch, and it even accommodated a few sips of whiskey from its stainless cylinder one night.
YETI is known for its coolers, and, as noted, the company calls the Rambler Tumblers “personal drink coolers.” They are made of 18/8 stainless steel with vacuum-insulated walls that regulate ambient liquid temp inside.
The BPA-free plastic lid snaps onto the top of the 20oz or 30oz version of the cup. The 20oz lid also moves freely to the company’s Rambler Lowball, a mini version of the YETI drinkware that I’ve come to love.
We brewed some coffee and poured a steaming cup. On average, with the lid on, the YETI allowed coffee to stay warm for 5 to 6 hours at room temperature. This is vastly longer than my everyday titanium mug.
Additionally, the ice jingling in my cocktail one night stayed around longer than my friends’ ice, who were drinking out of glassware. We later tested it more formally, and the Rambler kept ice for over 12 hours, essentially sealing out the temperatures beyond its lid.
Granted, this is not a replacement for a thermos-style bottle. The plastic lid fits securely on top and keeps what’s in from splashing out, but you cannot tip it over or throw it in a backpack without spilling.
The 18/8 stainless gives a clean palate, with no metallic taste. It’s easy to wash, too, as the cheap yeti cup and lid are both dishwasher safe. Additionally, there was no “coffee ghost” in different drinks, not a hint of residual taste when moving between beverage types although the plastic cap does seem to retain odors more than the cup does.
After surviving weeks of abuse, the Rambler is still holding strong. At $30, the Rambler is modestly priced compared to other stainless vessels.
One improvement: I would like a rubberized, non-slip bottom as an option for those occasions when I set the cup on an uneven surface like the hood of a car.
All in all, the YETI Rambler Tumblers are tough vessels that will do duty with any kind of drink, hot or cold, all day long.
With all the buzz surrounding Yeti tumblers in the retail market, customers have been asking us about branded Yeti tumblers for months now. Since Yeti still doesn’t offer in-house customization, top suppliers have finally enabled us to offer designer-inspired drinkware that can be branded with your company logo.
Of course, there’s a BIG difference in the price tag on a Yeti tumbler vs. our corporate brands, so we decided to put the Yeti to the test against three similar tumblers that boast the same stainless steel finish and vacuum technology. We performed our own field test to see just how long each one could hold ice in a controlled setting, and the results just may surprise you!
Note that in the photos from our field test, we’ll refer to the products by the numbers below.
#1: Yeti Rambler (30 oz) $39.99
*Note that the Yeti only holds 30 oz without the lid. It actually holds less when you have the lid on it.)
#2: The Kong (26 oz) $15.99
It holds 30 oz without the lid, and includes a straw and a gift box.
#3: The Himalayan (20 oz) As low as $9.99
This is a smaller version very similar to the 20 oz Yeti Rambler, but at a fraction of the $30 price tag for the Yeti version! After our product test was completed, they released a 30 oz and 10 oz version as well.
#4: The Kirra Vacuum Water Bottle (25 oz) As low as $14.49
The Conditions for Our Test:
I conducted this field test in my air-conditioned home office, where the temperature hovered right around 72 degrees the whole time. I stored all four tumblers on my desk which sits in front of a bright, sunny window so there was some exposure to sunshine during the day. I used a handy digital thermometer to measure the temperature inside the tumblers.
9:30 a.m. Friday Morning:
I filled each of the tumblers to the top with ice, then realized I’d have to take a little bit of ice out to accommodate the lids. I went ahead and took the starting temperature inside each tumbler. The Kong, Yeti and Himalayan all hovered at a little over 16 degrees, but the Kirra dropped all the way down to 15.3 degrees.
1:30 p.m. Friday Afternoon
At the four hour mark, I saw very little ice melt in ANY of the tumblers. Temperatures for the Kong, Yeti and Himalayan all fell around 30 degrees, but the Kirra remained at 27 degrees.
6:30 p.m. Friday Evening
A bit more ice had melted but all four tumblers were still going strong after 9 hours. Temperatures came in at almost exactly the same for all of them.
10:30 p.m. Friday Night
Even after 13 hours, all four tumblers remained about ¾ full of ice. The Yeti and Kong seemed to perform exactly the same, and the Kirra had the least amount of ice melt proportionate to where it started. Little to no temperature change. I went to bed eager to see how they fared overnight.
7:30 a.m. Saturday Morning
Clocking in at 22 hours, all of the tumblers retained at least ½ of their ice overnight! (This is where I started to get impressed.) Temperature wise, the Himalayan came in just a few tenths of a degree warmer than the other tumblers and had the most melted ice, while the Kirra continued to hold the lead for the best ice retention. The Yeti and Kong remained neck and neck.
5:30 p.m. Saturday Evening
After being out and about all day Saturday, I couldn’t wait to get home and see how our tumblers fared at a whopping 32 hours into the test. At this point, I stopped taking the temperature because it seemed like a moot point. If it’s frozen, it’s frozen!
The Himalayan had a few slivers of ice left, and the Yeti pulled slightly ahead of the Kong in terms of ice retention, but not by much. The ice was still so frozen in the Kirra that I literally had to take an ice pick and chisel it down to get it out for measuring!
10:30 p.m. Saturday Night
At the 37 hour checkpoint, the ice in the Himalayan had completely melted. (But seriously, for a tumbler that can hold ice for over 32 hours for as little as $10? I’m not complaining.) The Yeti had more ice than the Kong, but the Kirra took a major lead at this point.
7:30 a.m. Sunday Morning
After a whopping 46 hours, ice had almost completely melted in the Kong and there was a little bit left in the Yeti. The Kirra clearly had the most.
7:30 a.m. Monday Morning
It’s really hard for me to believe that 70 hours later, there is still this much ice left in the Kirra. There were a few tiny pieces of ice left in the Yeti, and the Kong was completely melted. The ice in the Kirra eventually melted around 2 p.m.
Clearly the Kirra outshined the Yeti in terms of ice retention, so if maximum performance is your primary concern, then the Kirra is your best bet! I do think that the screw-on, spill-proof lid made a difference in our field test.
We can safely say that ALL four tumblers delivered exactly as promised, retaining ice for at LEAST 24 hours or longer. The bottom line? If the hefty price tag for Yeti isn’t working for your budget, you can choose any of our designer-inspired alternatives with ABSOLUTE CONFIDENCE, and add your logo to sweeten the deal!

Without a doubt, YETI is the cup of choice. The coveted holy grail of drink ware — whether you are a outdoor enthusiast backpacking across the tundra or a regular drinker of a good cup of Joe on the way to work. If you were lucky enough to find yourself the owner of a YETI, you now realize there was a hole in your life that you didn’t know exsisted before. But its ok, because now it is fulfilled.
BUT… Herein lies the problem:
1) Now everyone has the same cup!… Which YETI is yours? You put yours where? Is this my YETI?
and 2) Because of the high dollar price tag and the high demand, thieves are doing what they do best. boo. Generic, blank cups are easy to make “disappear”.
What is Powder coating?
Answer: Powder coating is an exciting advanced method of applying a decorative and protective finish to your YETI cup. A clean, and efficient electrostatic powder coating process that relies on the attraction between charged particles that are fused and melt together when heated. The heat of the oven causes a chemical reaction to occur and the powder to cure, creating a highly durable finish. Further, powder coating does not require the use of harmful chemicals.
What makes the powder “stick” to the YETI?
Answer: The powder is charged via an electrostatic process. This causes the powder to cling to the metal throughout the baking process.
What does “baking” have to do with it?
Answer: After your YETI coated with powder, it is crucial to properly bake it. The heat in the oven will cause the powder to melt and form a protective sheet around your YETI. This process gives the paint its increased durability and professional look.
Is It Environmentally Friendly?
Answer: Powder coating is recognized as an environmentally friendly process because it doesn’t rely on solvents or chemical carriers. Because powder coating relies on the electrostatic charge to hold the paint to the work piece, powder coating eliminates VOC emission problems.
Is it safe to drink from?
Answer: Yes. The outside of your cup is the only area being powder coated. Everything inside, where your beverage would touch, remains stainless steel and perfectly safe.
Can I put it in the dishwasher?
Answer: (seriously?) No, silly. Powder coating the outside of your YETI does not mean you can put it in the dishwasher…. well you CAN, but YETI says it’ll ruin the vaccum seal in your cup so… yeah. Lets go with no. just no. Better just hand wash it.
How Durable Is It?
Answer: Powder coatings are very resistant to cracking and peeling. The finish can scratch and be picked off like any painted on finish, but if you take care of your cup properly, your YETI should be beautiful for a very long time.
How durable is the powder coating and what types are there?
Answer: One of the best things about powder coating is how incredibly durable and strong the powder is. It stands up against the toughest conditions, keeping its original polished look.

cheap YETI Cups in Custom Film
The YETI Rambler is clearly the mug to have in your possession this holiday period and beyond. Pick up a few of them for your friends, and for your wife. The ice after 24 hours. wholesale YETI Rambler is the clear winner.
I set out to test the validity of the claims on YETI Coolers website about this supposed best insulated tumbler of all time. The reviews from their very own website were outlandish! Check this…
I bought the cheap Yeti Rambler Two weeks ago from my local outfitters store. Honestly, it is just the best mug, cup, drink carrier out there. I have had this for a little over two weeks and the yeti rambler is amazing and has kept my coffee, beer, sweet tea, and water the perfect temp every time. I take a sip and wow, just WOW. This thing is amazing! I can’t believe how ice cold the water is in the middle of the night as I’m taking a sip while checking on the newborn. Absolutely amazing how the liquid is still ice cold after 8 hrs. That is if I haven’t downed it already.
I was skeptical. I, we, you see all kinds of bullshit spread around by all kinds of folks. You gotta do your own research.
So I decided to my own research. Why not do the test in conjunction with the YETI Tumbler. One of our favorite drink companions the YETI Tumbler has been in our hands with various types of liquids including Vodka, coffee, beer, Kool-Aid, and too many other liquids to list.
YETI Rambler vs. YETI Tumbler Test and Review
One YETI Rambler 20oz against one YETI Tumbler 16oz mug. The air temperature in my kitchen was a constant 68F. I filled both with 163 grams of ice @ 7:46pm. Both had lids on. The YETI Rambler 20oz with the lid it came with which is clear plastic with a drinking hole in it. A rubber gasket allows for a close and tight fitting lid. The YETI Tumbler had a lid too, the after maker lid with a sliding/closing drink hole. I left it slid open to mimic the YETI version as closely as possible.
Ed Note: I gotta say that the sliding close/open option on the YETI Tumbler is nice. When driving down shitty dirt roads it is nice to close the lid as not to slosh the
cocktail coffee all over your pants on front seat of your truck. The YETI Rambler lid does not have a closed option.
8 Hours later…
First ice check of the Headhunters Fly Shop test v.1 of YETI Rambler vs. YETI Tumbler Test and Review was at 5:11 in the morning. The YETI Tumbler 16oz had lost 158 grams of its original 163 grams of ice. The YETI Rambler 20oz is starting to look good already.
The YETI Rambler 20 oz. only lost 20 grams of ice at 5:11 in the morning. A trickle of water poured from the YETI Rambler.
Just awesome. Clearly the winner at this point, nearly 8 hours in to the test, is the YETI Rambler.
YETI Rambler has the edge…
Air temperatures still holding at 68F. The ice in the YETI was rock solid. No bad ice here.
Fast forward to 1:26pm, now near 18hrs of ice in the YETI Rambler I poured out another 48 grams. Still plenty of ice to cool your beverage here! Performing much better than I anticipated for sure.
24 Hours into the test…
At nearly 24 hrs into the YETI Rambler vs. YETI Tumbler Test and Review the YETI still had plenty of ice. Honest. The photos prove it.
I have used the YETI Tumbler since our good friend Capt. Scott Yetter introduced me to the Professional Drinking Cup a number of years ago. I adopted it and had been bragging them up ever since. Hot coffee in the morning and cold cocktails int he afternoon. Rocked it in the boat for guests and at home for guests.
I may be changing my tune as of today. The YETI Rambler is clearly the mug to have in your possession this holiday period and beyond. Pick up a few of them for your friends, and for your wife.
The YETI Tumbler is out of the game. But, it comes in at under 12 bucks. The YETI Rambler 20 oz is not cheap at a penny under 30 bucks. The performance alone may push you towards the YETI product although the YETI Tumbler with the lid configuration and if you can pick up nearly 3 of them for the same price as one YETI Rambler you may find yourself filling your kitchen cabinets with a few YETI products.
YETI Rambler the clear Winner!
I have not done a test on hot liquids but I am sure it will fare just fine. I have had several cups of coffee from the YETI Rambler and love it. Holds the temp well.
We have both for your pleasure at Headhunters Fly Shop in Craig Montana. Give us a call and we will use the magic of YETI, no the magic of the USPS and get a few in the mail for you this holiday season.
YETI Rambler 30 oz Stainless Steel Vacuum Insulated Tumbler with Lid
List Price: $39.99
You Save: $25.09 (64%)
Since the launch of the Ramblers we have done several tests and have concluded that the tumblers are dishwasher safe. The cheap YETI Rambler may be placed on any shelf within the dishwasher, and the lid should be placed on the top shelf. … Here is the reply direct from Yeti!
This tumbler is there to solve the age old annoyance of less than frosty beverages when working away from a freezer all day. YETI over-engineered their Ramblers with kitchen grade 18/8 stainless steel and double-wall vacuum insulation to ensure that you never come back to a less than amazing beverage again.
The Science Behind A YETI
Ever since YETI made its debut in 2006, it’s secured a cult-like following amongst avid outdoorsmen and the casual beverage drinkers alike. At first glance, they may seem like just another cooler. But the second you begin using one, you know it’s anything but ordinary. YETI coolers look and feel sturdy, they are mega strong, and they do an amazing job of keeping your food and drinks ice cold for a very long time. You may be wondering, “What kind of magic is behind this?”
Look no further, we present “The Science Behind a YETI:
Built For The Wild
What exactly makes a YETI cooler so strong? It all starts with the manufacturing process of the shell itself. Just like your kayak, YETI coolers are roto-molded, rendering a impact-resistant product that has no seams and offers long-term durability. Your YETI can take a serious beating: Go ahead and drop it, kick it, stand on it or sit on it. A Yeti will not fall apart at the seams.
YETI Coolers Commercial | 500 lb man vs YETI from YETI Coolers on Vimeo.
Latches, hinges and handles are usually the first things to fail on most coolers, but the guys at YETI didn’t skimp on the details. The T-Rex™ lid latches are the same latches used to secure hatches on ATVs and the YETI NeverFail™ hinge system consists of a full-length, rust-proof aluminum rod integrated into hinge stops which are molded into the lid. The handles themselves are virtually indestructible and the plug has a story of its own, because we all know one of the worst things that can happen is a busted latch.
Keep Ice Longer
While durability is a definite advantage, it’s the ability to do what coolers are meant to do— keeping your food and drinks cold and fresh— that has pushed these products into the limelight. YETI Coolers use up to 3″ of pressure-injected commercial grade polyurethane foam in the walls and lid to make sure your ice stays ice all day long. Let’s just say if your ice isn’t cold, your ice is broken, not your YETI.
Lock It Up
Ever come back to your cooler after thinking you closed it to find that it has been open for hours, leaving all your drinks warm and food mushy? Fear no longer! The YETI cooler doesn’t just close – it seals. The full frame, freezer-quality gasket circles keep your lid shut tight and the cold sealed in so you don’t have to worry about warm beer ever again.

In the Canadian wild, a fair-chase hunt creates a story that’s not focused on the kill.
He started as a packer, when he was just 17 years old. But that was six years after experiencing sheep hunting for the first time. Tavis grew up in Whitehorse, cheap yeti cups next door to one of the most prolific sheep guides of his generation: Alan Klassen. Tavis idolized Alan, and the two became friends.
“He had sheep on the wall, and was guiding in the Mackenzie Mountains then,” Tavis recalled. “And I remember being over there all the time asking him questions, and listening to his stories. I knew I wanted to do that too.”
Alan invited Tavis on a late season sheep hunt in the southern Yukon when he was just 11. Tavis remembers hustling to keep up with Al’s feet that never seemed to stop moving. He remembers feeling dog tired, and the night they lost their tent in a gale force windstorm. But he also remembers seeing the country open wide and sheep around every corner. He carries an old picture of himself holding up the horns of the ram Alan eventually harvested. In the photo, Tavis is stick-limbed and skinny, smirking beneath the more serious expression he still wears today.
For Tavis, it’s always been about sharing the complete hunting experience with his clients. After working his way through the ranks at Arctic Red, he now runs the entire outfit. The experience of hunting sheep has remained at the forefront of his mind.
“The question becomes how easy do you make the hunt?” Tavis said. “In my mind, the beauty of sheep hunting is in the challenge it presents you. The typical comment I get from most people who’ve done any sheep hunting is that it’s changed them somehow. They didn’t realize what they were capable of, and that’s what’s cool about the pursuit of sheep – it makes you a better person in a lot of ways.”
But it goes deeper than just placing clients in situations that will present a challenge and encourage them to grow. Tavis and his wife Rebecca literally live this lifestyle. They’ve chosen to raise their family at basecamp during the three month season – getting back to the intrinsic connection they say all humans share with the wilderness. It’s a connection they believe is often forgotten in modern life, and according to Rebecca, it’s the reason they’re so successful as an outfit.
“We genuinely love what we do,” Rebecca said. “We put our entire selves into this outfit and our clients. We have hard days, and extreme challenges. It’s hard on our family at times because of all the stress. But that’s what makes us stronger, that’s why we keep coming back.”
And really, that’s why everyone comes back – the clients, the crew. Arctic Red is a family. From the smallest Molnar to the greenest packer. Their way of life sticks with you once you’ve experienced it, and the call of the Mackenzies is hard to ignore.
When I first visited Arctic Red, I was immediately entranced with the wild country and the Molnar’s lifestyle.
I met Tavis about 10 years ago at the Wild Sheep Foundation Convention, and I liked him immediately. He has this very genuine charisma and charm about him. It wasn’t until a few years later that I was able to experience a hunting adventure within the Arctic Red concession. I went along on a great friends first sheep hunt and we had one hell of an adventure that culminated with a great ram harvested on the last day of the hunt. I was hooked. Before departing basecamp, Tavis put his enormous hand on my shoulder and asked me point blank, ‘What is your plan with all of the footage?’ I told him that I didn’t really know, but that we’d probably put out some sort of hunting piece. Then he said, ‘If you want to tell a story about Arctic Red, you should probably REALLY get to know Arctic Red.’
I took his advice to heart, and more than anything else, I wanted to make something Tavis and Rebecca were proud of. Over the last seven years, Tavis has become a great friend and has graciously invited me and members of the Seacat team up every year to document the Arctic Red experience. People ask me all the time what my dream trip is. It’s Arctic Red and the adventure of being there. If I make it back every single year until I die, that won’t be enough trips.
Now, 7 years later Seacat Creative brings you a film that celebrates the simple, challenging, and idyllic life of the Mackenzie Mountains. The legacy is the place. The legacy is the experience.
World traveled anglers Oliver White, Blane Chocklett, Jako Lucas, and Christiaan Pretorius head to Baja to check something off all their bucket lists, land a grande Roosterfish from the beach.
We’ve all been dreaming of a grande roosterfish from the beach—a fish over 30 pounds—and now that we’re here, I can’t see any of us backing down.
For each one of us, a roosterfish from the beach is bucket list material, but after a day and a half, we still hadn’t even seen a fish within casting range. I knew the roosterfish game was tough, but I expected the challenge to be getting them to eat, not finding them.
Baja is an anomaly—one of the few places where 30-pound+ roosters roam the beaches and you can catch them on foot.
It can be endlessly frustrating. The fish are erratic and unpredictable, making the ones that do cooperate even more special. Eventually there he was, “the man,” chasing mullet in the surf, with his comb up out of the water waving like a flag.
After days of standing and waiting, we were getting shot after shot, and some fish seemed interested. I heard a shout, looked up, and Jako was hooked up! Finally, the drought had ended.
We all knew that it could turn around at any time, and we’d all been on trips where the last day was also the best day. On our last day, we had plenty of sunshine, a manageable breeze, and despite all our trials, conditions felt right. We started getting a few shots at big fish, and were all getting in our wind sprints to and from the surf, so we had a strong sense that something good was about to happen. Christiaan ran to the nearest point of sand, hoping he could intercept the moving fish.
His third cast was past the target, but the fish lit up anyway, turned, and inhaled the fly. It was a completely different eat—a different level of commitment than anything we had seen so far. We knew it was a big fish but had no idea how big it really was until Jako tried to wrap his hand around the tail and found that it required two hands.
Fish like these are the reason we come to Baja, and it’s a feat that isn’t likely to be repeated any time soon. Just seeing that fish was a lifetime event for me. I can’t imagine what it was like catching it.
If you’re reading this from a crowded parking lot in the shadow of the stadium, it’s probably too late. Here’s hoping you’ve got some cooking skills, or befriended someone who does. If not, we’ve got some tips on a few great barbecue joints in great football towns. Stop in to fill up before the game, or better yet, be the tailgate hero with a hefty take-out order. The trick is to order whole cuts of barbecue, like a brisket, a few racks of ribs, or a full pork shoulder. Keep the barbecue hot in a cooler until it’s time to eat, Pack a knife, a cutting board, and a folding table. Serve it up hot and fresh, and let everyone assume you did all the cooking.
Home of Georgia Tech – There’s plenty of good pork barbecue to be had in Georgia, but it was Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q that first blessed Atlanta with great smoked beef. They smoke a mean brisket, but it’s the beef rib that’s most impressive. A huge hunk of peppery smoked beef comes barely clinging to a bone the size of your forearm. It’s a good idea to share one. They know pork too. Just try the tender spare ribs or the unique fried pork rib appetizer. For some real Georgia flavor, you can’t go wrong with a side of fried okra and classic Brunswick stew.
Home of the University of Texas- It’s a little south of downtown, but Valentina’s Tex-Mex Barbecue makes one of the finest barbecue breakfasts in the country. Juicy brisket, eggs, and cheese come wrapped in tortillas so pillowy, you’d think clouds were the secret ingredient. Go bigger with the Holyfield that adds bacon, beans, and fried potatoes. They’re perfect for an early game, and the spectacular queso is great anytime. Closer to the stadium, and great for a later kickoff is Stiles Switch Brew & Q. They’re known for massive beef ribs, tangy pork ribs, and some of the best banana pudding you’ll find. With plenty of TV’s, it’s not a bad spot to watch the game either. Sit back with one of the local drafts, or grab a bottle of Bloody Mary mix, made by the owner’s wife, for the tailgate.
Home of the Ohio State University – Ohio isn’t exactly known for barbecue, but Ray Ray’s Hog Pit is trying their best to make a name for smoked meats in the capital city. James Anderson runs the food truck on High Street. Just look for the smoke wafting from the hulking smoker in the parking lot where folks line up for meaty baby back ribs. Spare ribs, brisket, and chicken are also available, but pay attention to the special board. There may be a whole hog from Anderson’s heritage breed pig farm east of town, or their famous Meat Corn. The thoroughly original creation packs a solid coating of chopped brisket onto an ear of butter-doused sweet corn. It’s a full meal on a stick, and is definitely better than it looks.
Home of Texas Tech – Texas is full of legendary barbecue joints, but there’s plenty of new blood too. After only a couple years in business Evie Mae’s Barbecue is known statewide, and that’s saying something in Texas. After outgrowing their food truck, their new building sits in Wolfforth, just outside the Lubbock city limits. The weekend lines can get crazy, so order ahead if possible. The beef ribs and brisket are hard to beat, but it’s the pork ribs you won’t be able to put down. They’re smoky, tender, and a final glaze gives them an addictive sweet side. There’s not a dud on the menu, so feel free to add some smoked turkey or green chile sausage. Cheese grits and greens are some of the best sides in Texas, and don’t forget dessert. There are usually a half dozen to choose from including banana pudding and, when in season, a heaping strawberry pie.
Home of Arizona State University – When dozens of Arizonans are willing to wait in the desert heat for barbecue, you know its good. The line at Little Miss BBQ is long, but moves quickly. Most folks already know they’re getting some brisket because it’s some of the best you’ll find outside of Texas. They also make their own juicy sausage links. One special to look for is the smoked lamb neck. The tender meat pulls off the bone with no effort, and it’s richer than any pulled pork. If you’ve already endured the heat outside, the jalapeno cheese grits won’t be a problem. And if the brisket and ribs aren’t smoky enough for you, finish things off with a slice of smoked pecan pie.
Home of the University of Alabama – The roar of the stadium can probably still be in heard in Northport just outside Tuscaloosa. It’s the home of a classic Alabama barbecue joint. Decades of grease drip down the massive brick chimney, at Archibald’s Bar-B-Que, and the smell that hits you as soon as the car door opens is ribs – pork spare ribs, to be precise. Order from the counter inside, and take a seat at one of the few stools to watch the show in the pit as dozens of rib racks are flipped and prodded until they’ve reached their peak. There’s more on the menu, but don’t let the rest distract you from the pile of spare ribs doused in the tart and spicy barbecue sauce ladled over top. The smell of vinegar and tomatoes hits before the first bite. The meat isn’t tough, but it’s not falling off the bone either. The edges are a little rough, and maybe a tad crunchy, if you’re lucky. Let the ends marinate in the pool of sauce that’s accumulated on the plate, and use the white bread to sop up a little sauce for a mid-course snack. Once you’re left with just a pile of bones, it’s perfectly natural to want another rack to go.
Home of Texas A&M – College Station has the university, the football, and all the game-day traffic, but head a few miles north to Bryan for the best local barbecue. Fargo’s Pit BBQ just moved into a new, bigger location, and brought their wood-fired smokers with them. Just don’t ask to see them. Pitmaster Alan Caldwell keeps the pit room off-limits, maybe because the magical things he does to pork spare ribs are trade secrets. The ribs are seasoned just right. They’re salty, but don’t have the heavy black pepper of Central Texas-style barbecue. Ribs this meaty are often tough, but these are juicy and tender. Quite simply, they’re some of the best in Texas. A few slices of fatty brisket or a smoky half chicken won’t hurt either. If you have a craving for sides, make it the mac & cheese, and please save room for the homemade peach cobbler.
Home of East Carolina University – Samuel Jones carries on a whole hog barbecue legacy at Sam Jones Barbecue. Just a few miles north of his family’s legendary Skylight Inn (since 1947), the hogs are still cooked the old way, over wood coals. Ask for a pit room tour before the meal and feel the heat coming off the enormous brick chimney where the coals are made. Inside the dining room, you can hear the cleavers at the massive chopping block where the finished hogs are seasoned and readied for service. Get the freshly chopped pork on a plate with their famous cornbread and slaw or on a sandwich. There’s plenty more on the menu that’s also wood-cooked like the juicy chickens and the meaty spare ribs. Finish it all off with some banana pudding, or ask for strawberry pudding when in season.
Home of the University of Houston – Texas barbecue is known for the trinity of meats: beef brisket, pork ribs, and sausage. Some menus don’t get any bigger than that. At The Pit Room in Houston that’s only the beginning. Chef Bramwell Tripp has gotten more inventive with items like chicharrones and house made bacon. There’s a trio of house made sausages, including a venison version. Tacos come on thick tortillas made with smoked brisket fat. Then there’s the massive pickle bar. Garnishes are usually a barbecue afterthought, but The Pit Room provides pickled carrots, onions, and jalapenos, oh, and some fine dill pickles too. In the pit room of The Pit Room, you’ll find a pair of wood-fired steel smokers. Given the added expense of all the ventilation equipment required to use them in the middle of the city, they show owner Michael Sambrooks’s dedication to wood-cooked barbecue. The barbecue community thanks him.
Home of Vanderbilt University – This may start fights in Tennessee, but the best Memphis-style, dry-rubbed ribs can be found in Nashville. A thick layer of the rust-colored powder is layered on the baby backs at Peg Leg Porker. Served uncut in a whole slab, the ribs pull apart easily. The same dust gets sprinkled on the excellent chicken wings, and to wash it all down, try a few sips of Peg Leg Whiskey, a bourbon line from owner Carey “Peg Leg” Bringle (who lost a leg to cancer). Another stop in town for great dry-rubbed ribs is Martin’s Bar-B-Que Joint. But the specialty at their locations all over town is whole hog. Owner Pat Martin is passionate about the West Tennessee style of whole hog cooking. It’s a little smokier than its North Carolina cousin, with less of a vinegar tang. Get it as a sandwich with slaw, or more appropriately on top of a cornbread hoecake in a Martin’s signature “Redneck Taco.”
Home of the University of Washington – Jack Timmons missed Texas, and he missed the barbecue even more when he moved to Seattle. After decades of success in the tech industry, the Texas A&M grad quit his job, bought a smoker in Texas, and stopped at the Texas A&M campus to have it christened before the long trip to Washington. He first built up his catering chops, then Timmons opened Jack’s BBQ in Seattle’s SoDo neighborhood. The operation is a slice of Texas in the Northwest. Brisket, jalapeno sausage, and pork ribs – smoked over a mix of mesquite, post oak, and hickory – are menu highlights. Timmons also offers other Texas touches like queso, chili con carne, and brisket enchiladas; items not often found at Texas barbecue joints. Come on Tuesdays for the beef rib special. These monster short ribs pair perfectly with a smoked old fashioned from the bar.
Duck hunting dogs are hardworking and obedient. But Sam likes to work on her own terms.
We were lucky to have farm land and a few pot holes that attracted ducks in the late fall. Instead of riding right to the blinds in Rangers like we do today, we would often trudge through thick black mud for hundreds of yards with our gear slung over our shoulders. In 1985, the state-of-the-art gear we use today didn’t exist, and if it did, we most likely couldn’t have afforded it. Carhart bibs, cowboy boots, and five or six layers got the job done, mostly. I had never even heard of waders.
My first memory of hunting ducks was crouching behind our blind for cover. We were busted by a group of Mallards on our way in that afternoon, and my younger cousin Hank was scolding me for moving or making noise as they circled overhead trying to commit. I couldn’t have been more than five or six years old at the time, him being three or four. It has pretty much stayed that way throughout our entire lives, Hank’s passion for hunting ducks burns as strongly as his dad’s.
Uncle Steve’s first lab was named Jack. A big black lab with a block for a head and a huge heart. Prior to Jack, if a few birds were knocked down, retrieval meant jumping in a rowboat and ripping across the pond as fast as possible to scoop them up. Since then, there have been seven labs that have hunted for Steve and our family. From Jack to Buck, to Deuce, to Sam, and then Little Sam. During that time we’ve gotten some better spots to hunt, improved our gear, and burned through dozens of pairs of waders. What hasn’t changed is our commitment to the pursuit, Uncle Steve’s connection with his dog, the Koehly family huddled up in a blind season after season, and the joy in seeing the next in pup in line launch into a retrieve.
In 2006 Cheap YETI Cups Coolers was founded with a simple mission: build the cooler you’d use every day if it existed.
But the YETI coolers cheap available at the time just weren’t up to our outdoor adventures – the handles would break, the latches would snap off, and the lids would cave in. Not only was it a hassle to replace our coolers after each season, but also these cheaply built, ordinary ice chests were limiting our good times. And that frustration led us to a solution.
In 2006, we founded Cheap YETI Cup Coolers with a simple mission: build the cooler we’d use every day if it existed. One that was built for the serious outdoor enthusiast rather than for the mass-discount retailers. One that could take the abuse we knew we’d put it through out in the field and on the water. One that simply wouldn’t break. We decided early on that product innovation would come from necessity and firsthand experience – not from market research and data analysis. Today, YETI products perform when it matters most – whether that be an excursion into the remote Alaskan wilderness, chasing redfish on the Gulf coast, or just getting together with friends in the backyard.
